CANCER patients at Southend Hospital are the first in the county to receive a revolutionary treatment.

The hospital is the first in Essex to offer intensity modulated radiation therapy, which produces tailored radiation doses which wrap around tumours, helping avoid potential damage to nearby healthy tissue.

The treatment means cancers such as head and neck tumours can be accurately pinpointed while avoiding vulnerable organs such as the salivary glands or spinal cord.
