A government quango set up to help with the regeneration of Thurrock has been axed.
The Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corp- oration will be “absorbed” into Thurrock Council from April 1, 2012.
The demise of the corporation, set up in 2003, will mean major planning decisions will be decided by local councillors.
The corporation has 44 full time workers, but it is not yet clear if any jobs will be lost. That will be decided by Thurrock Council. The end of the corporation was announced yesterday by Thames Gateway minister Bob Neill.
Mr Neill said: “Putting Thurrock Council back in command of local regeneration puts decision-making power back into democratically elected hands – marking a new era in the area and giving local people more influence to shape the place in which they live.”
