A DOMESTIC abuse project helping victims in Southend has received national recognition.

Southend Council's Sanctuary scheme was one of 11 local authority projects highlighted in a research report by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

The report looked at the effectiveness of schemes that allow victims of domestic abuse to stay safely in their own homes.

The scheme in Southend involves modifying a victim’s home, often involving installation of a safe room.

This means that if there is a threat at the house, there is a safe haven for them to go to and they can contact the police once safely inside.
