A man wanted over the murder of a woman in a taxi has been arrested by police.

A man ran away after a 22-year-old woman was repeatedly stabbed in Northfield, Birmingham, at around 8am.

West Midlands Police arrested Junior Saleem Oakes, also known as Mohammed Saleem (Salim) Junior Oakes, in connection with the murder.

Police earlier said the victim, who has not been named, and her attacker were believed to have been in a relationship.

They were both passengers in the taxi - a light-coloured Peugeot car.

A force spokeswoman said the driver called 999 from the scene, on Dimsdale Road, but the woman was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived and could not be saved.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jones said: "This is a complex and dynamic investigation involving a large number of officers who have been actively pursuing a number of significant lines of inquiry throughout this morning and this afternoon.

"As a result of these inquiries, we have taken the unusual step of naming Junior Oakes as someone we wish to speak to in connection with the case.

"We are now widening our search and asking members of the public outside of the Northfield area to contact us with any sightings."
