JASON Hallett put in a star performance to knock former club Chelmsford out of the county cup and put Concord into the last four tonight.

Hallett scored the winning penalty in a shoot-out, after the match had finished 3-3. Anthony Cook and David Bridges missed their spot kicks for Chelmsford, and Concord's Nicky Cowley missed one for Concord, but Hallett held his nerve to thump the ball high into the net and seal a 6-5 sudden death win.

It capped an absorbing game in which Hallet had put Concord in front early on, and then equalised for them in the second half after goals from David Rainford and Ishmael Welsh had put Chelmsford 2-1 up.

Concord captain Tony Stokes came off the bench as a half-time substitute to make it 3-2 with 10 minutes to go, but Aiden Palmer scored with virtually the last kick of the game to take it to spot kicks.

Hallett gave Concord a 12th minute lead with a composed finish against his former side. Cowley's ball put him one-on-one with Stuart Searle, and he rounded the advanced keeper and side footed calmly home.

Clarets were level eight minutes before half-time when the experienced David Rainford curled a direct free-kick from 25 yards over the wall and in off the post.

And they scored a second a minute later when right back Justin Miller bent in a lovely cross and Ishmael Welsh out-jumped his markers to head home from six yards.

Concord should have equalised immediately as Hallett rounded Searle from Danny Spendlove's pass but ballooned over with the goal at his mercy.

But the former Canvey man made amends and made it an incredible nine goals in this season's county cup on the hour mark as he raced on to a ball over the top and then turned Searle inside out before slotting home.

And then Spendlove broke down the left and put in an inch-perfect cross for the arriving Stokes to head home at the back post.

It looked like Concord were through, but Palmer scored at the death and set up the spot kick drama.Concord (4-4-2): Lovelock; Coyne, Easterford, King, Harris; Osifuwa, Lampe, Cowley, Spendlove; H Elmes (Stokes 46), Hallett.

Chelmsford (4-3-3): Searle; Miller, Clark, Bridges, Palmer; Corcoran, Rainford (Simmonds 65), Parker; Vassell, Cook, Welsh.

But it was another defeat for Billericay Town as they went down 5-0 at Eastleigh in the Conference South,
