Canvey Island 3, Wingate & Finchley 2
GEORGE THORPE at the Prospects Stadium

A SLOPPY Canvey pulled a win out of the bag on Saturday despite a poor performance against Wingate & Finchley.

Defensive errors and weak passes gave the Gulls an uphill struggle, but Jay Curran’s strike five minutes from time saw the hosts win in the end.

The visitors thought they had grabbed the lead in the fifth minute when Spencer Bellotti was not flagged offside and put the ball past Ashlee Jones.

But after a discussion between referee Chris O’Donnell and his assistant it was decided Bellotti was offside as Richard Orlu had not got the last touch on a looping ball.

The striker did open the scoring 13 minutes later when Ashley Dumas hit an awful back pass, allowing Bellotti to take the ball and slot home.

The lacklustre Gulls appeared to wake up after conceding with Orlu going close in the 24th minute when he steered a close-range header over.

Then in the 38th minute Kevin Dobinson crossed to Bradley Woods-Garness, who swivelled and shot past Bobby Smith for his 20th goal of the season.

He nearly made it 2-1 with an overhead kick in the 56th minute, but Wingate went ahead 10 minutes later when Orlu failed to connect with a clearance with Bellotti finishing well.

This again shook Canvey’s players awake and in the 77th minute, Woods-Garness passed to Curran who scuffed his shot, only to see James Hawes run in and score with an open goal before him.

Both sides went searching for a winner and temperatures seemed to be boiling over at times as they disagreed with many of the referee’s decisions.

However the home side got the win in the 85th minute when Woods-Garness ran to the byline before pulling back to Curran, and he had an empty net to shoot in to.

Despite furious protests from Wingate - who thought Curran was offside - the goal stood.

Canvey manager Steve Tilson said: “It was a good result in the end but I was really disappointed with the goals we’ve conceded as we gave both away.

“Wingate made it tough for us and in the end we were a bit lucky to get the three points.”

Bognor Regis 0, Concord Rangers 1
JACK SMITH at Nyewood Lane

CONCORD bolstered their play-off position credentials with a win at a solid Bognor side.

The best chance of the first period came for the Beachboys with Leon Gordon latching onto a pass and beating the offside trap, but firing his volley straight at the Rocks keeper.

Bognor played some nice stuff at the start of the second half but failed to create chances and Concord took advantage with some swift counter attacks, coming close when James White drove just wide from close range.

Then came the bit of magic that was required as a fluent move was ended in style with Jason Hallett playing provider to strike partner Tony Stokes, who struck a powerful left footed effort into the bottom corner.

It send the Concord faithful and comically a group of Rocks youth boys into wild celebrations.

The hosts began to edge forward after falling behind with most of their wing engineered attacks ending with Concord's magnificent loan keeper Luke Chambers picking out a number of dangerous crosses.

Bognor looked to have been gifted a route back into the game when Steve King was adjudged to have brought down a home player.

Up stepped centre half Sam Pearce, striking strong towards the bottom left, only to see Chambers pull a save out of the top drawer.

Little more goal threat came after that, and the Beachboys left much the happier.

Kingstonian 0, East Thurrock 2

GOALS in either half gave Rocks a terrific win at Kingsmeadow.

They took a 10th minute lead with an excellent strike from Sam Higgins, and they held that lead at half-time.

And they doubled their advantage in the 66th minute with an equally good strike from James Lawson.

Dave Collis, who has just been signed from Billericay, impressed on his debut, and the returning Steve Sheehan played a big part in helping the Rocks keep a clean sheet.

It moved John Coventry's side up one place to 13th in the table.

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Basingstoke Town 3, Billericay Town 3

FOR the second week running a late goal broke Billericay hearts.

Last week it was a late winner for Bromley at New Lodge, on Saturday it was a last-gasp equaliser for hosts Basingstoke.

Basingstoke took a 16th minute lead with a goal from Manny Williams after Town failed to deal with a ball into the box.

But Billericay were soon level when Rob Swaine scored when the keeper failed to deal with a Junior Luke long throw.

Town took a 33rd minute lead with a finish from Alex Osborn after Chris Wild had knocked down another Luke throw.

But it was all square again five minutes before the break with an own goal following a free-kick.

Billericay looked to have secured a much needed win when Leon Smith came off the bench to make his debut after arriving from Wingate, and deflected the ball home to score with his first touch on 81 minutes.

But Williams scored from a 91st minute corner to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE

GREAT Wakering made up ground on league leaders Burnham Ramblers with a 4-1 home win over London APSA.

Ashley Hawkins gave Rovers a 12th minute lead with a smart left foot finish from 12 yards, and the hosts soon made it 2-0 with an own goal from a corner.

Late in the half they made it 3-0 when player-manager Dan Trenkel pressed the visiting keeper, forcing him to kick the ball off of him and into the net.

The visitors pulled one back in the second half, but Ashley Hawkins made it 4-1 from the penalty spot in the closing stages.

It saw second-placed Rovers close the gap on leaders Burnham, who were held 0-0 at home by Takeley.

There were six changes to the Bowers & Pitsea side, and they put on a hard-working performance in a goalless draw at at Enfield 1893.

Southend Manor turned on the style to record a 5-0 win at home to bottom club Clapton.

Manor took an early lead through Ash Pibworth, and doubled their advantage early in the second half when Adam Vyse headed home unmarked from a free-kick.

They made it 3-0 when Aaron Baldwin finished after picking up a ball through the middle, and Jamie Salmon added a fourth and a fifth, his first from a free-kick and his second a screamer from open play.

A brace from Sarfraz Pivanno helped Sporting Bengal to a 3-0 win at home to Hullbridge Sports.

Dave Reynolds' 27th minute strike for Basildon United made it 1-1 in their game at Sawbridgeworth Town, but the hosts scored twice more before the break to make it 3-1.

James Mays scored again for the hosts after the break, before Greg Akpele added Basildon's second 20 minutes from time to ensure it ended 4-2 to Sawbo.
