Laurie Carter ready for ups and downs at Basildon United
BASILDON boss Laurie Carter said he expects it to be a “rollercoaster” season for his high-flying side.
The Bees lost 2-1 at home on Tuesday evening to Tower Hamlets in the Essex Senior League with goals from Kaine Wilson and Syrus Gordon cancelling out a stunner from Greg Akpele.
Wilson gave the visitors the lead in the 24th minute before Akpele scored on the stroke of half time when he cut in from the left wing before curling home a shot from 25 yards out.
It was Hamlets who had the last say though with Gordon popping up in the 55th minute to see all three points go to the away side.
Carter, who took over in the Colhart Stadium hotseat during the summer, said his team were out muscled by their more physical opponents.
But he said that might happen during the season to his side who sit in fifth place after winning five of their first eight league games.
He said: “I thought Hamlets were stronger than us physically, so with a young side like ours we are susceptible to that.
“It is going to a bit of a rollercoaster season with the young players we have.
“I am pleased with the start we have had though because our aim is to develop players and we just see it as an education for them.
“We try to play quick, passing football which will come unstuck against some teams in the league when it doesn’t quite click together.
“To finish in the top half this season would be great, but it is really about developing the guys this year.”
New signings are on the horizon for Basildon with centre back Aaron Kurner, who has been studying and coaching in the USA, expected to be in the squad for Saturday’s match away at Sawbridgeworth.
The Bees are also waiting on getting international clearance from the States for ex-Ipswich player Ben Sartain.
Meanwhile, they are also speaking to two players at another club about them joining at Colhart, although club officials would not confirm the names of the names of the players involved.
