In-form Concord and Chelmsford clash
10:50am Tuesday 21st January 2014 in Sport
CONCORD host Chelmsford tonight in Essex’s biggest non-league derby.
Both are in very decent form and a win for the Clarets could see them draw level of points with Concord, who are just three points off the play-off places.
This Skrill South fixture which was originally set for December 28 but was called off because of a power failure at the Aspect Arena.
Yesterday Concord’s chairman Antony Smith said the pitch was still a bit soggy in places but had a “70/30” chance of being ready to stage tonight’s match.
Concord’s trip to Tonbridge fell victim to the bad weather on Saturday but Chelmsford played and thrashed Whitehawk 4-0.
Goals from Rob Edmans, Luke Callander and a Michael Cheek brace took manager Mark Hawkes’ league record to four wins, two draws and one defeat since taking over the job. His tenure has also included a penalty shoot-out defeat in the county cup – to Concord.
During the same period, Concord have had five wins, two draws and two defeats.
Tomorrow’s fixture has all the makings of a humdinger, including a backdrop which saw Concord boss Danny Cowley turn down the Chelmsford job before Hawkes was appointed, and the that some Clarets fans reacted angrily following the late postponement of the derby over the Christmas period.
Kick-off tonight is 7.45pm. Supporters should check the game is on before travelling.
