GREAT Wakering boss Dan Trenkel believes the Essex Senior League title is now theirs to lose.

With two months of the season to go, Rovers went three points clear at the top of the division following Saturday’s win over Haringey.

And despite championship rivals Tower Hamlets and Enfield 1893 having games in hand, player-manager Trenkel says he would not change places with either.

He said: “I think it is in our own hands now. Enfield would go one point above us if they won their four games in hand, but I’d rather be where we are.

“We were in a similar position to Enfield last year, with games in hand as we chased Burnham (who won the league).

“But at this stage, points on the board are what matters.

“Enfield cannot afford any slip ups now and that will put pressure on them. And it is a division where any team can beat any of the top teams on their day.

“Tower Hamlets are also right on our tails, but all we can do is keep winning.”

After an indifferent December, Wakering have put the afterburners on during the weather-blighted start to the year with five wins and a draw with Enfield.

Trenkel said: “There have been games in recent weeks where Tower Hamlets and Enfield will have thought we have a tough game and they will have been heartbroken when they came in at 4.45pm and seen that we’ve won. I know because I’ve been there.

“But I’m happy with where we are now as a club. It has taken me two years to get the team and sprit I want together here and now we need to keep it going.”

Rovers will continue their title push tonight when they welcome Clapton to Burroughs Park.

Midfielder Jay Smith will come back into the Wakering squad after returning from a trip overseas, while striker Jay Nash has returned to the club after a spell with Maldon & Tiptree.

Trenkel said: “I’ve never beaten Clapton as a manager in the four games we’ve played them so we owe them one.

“They have some really good fans and are strong at home. But we have some really good fans and they really help us too. And we are unbeaten at home this year so we’ll be in confident mood.”

Elsewhere in the division tonight, Bowers & Pitsea host Sawbridgeworth Town at the Len Salmon Stadium.

Hullbridge’s home league game with Southend Manor, and Basildon United’s league cup semi-final at Sporting Bengal last night, were both postponed because of water-logged pitches
