ROBIN Womack’s fine early season form has seen him surge to the top of the world rankings for both shot putt and discus.

The London 2012 Paralympic bronze medalist endured a frustrating 2013 campaign, finishing eighth at the World Championships.

But Womack, from Southend, is now back to his best and determined to enjoy another successful season.

“I don’t really know what went wrong last year, but it was certainly a frustrating time for me,” said the keen Southend United supporter.

“Maybe it was a come down from London, but I also lost a lot of weight and that affected my balance which meant I was falling away at the end of my throws.

“I was determined to come back from that though and this has been my best ever start to a season.

“It’s the best I’ve thrown since London and it’s obviously nice to be number one in the world, even if it is still very early on in the season.”

Womack leads the way in the shot with 10.75 metres and 31 metres in the discus.

And he now wants to improve on that form to make sure he wins a medal at the European Championships which are being held in Swansea in August.

“I want to win medals in both events this year,” said Womack, who recently returned from a training camp in Arizona.

“The discus will be very tough but that’s the target and certainly what I’m aiming for.

“We also have the IPC series which is similar to what the able-bodied athletes have with the Diamond League so it’s another big year.”

Womack is therefore fired up to do well and is also keen to repay his family for their support.

“It’s not easy on my family because I have to go away a lot but they’ve stuck by me,” said the 42-year-old.

“I’d like to thank my wife Debbie and my children Chloe, Thomas and Jessica and I want to do well for them too.”
