CONCORD Rangers goalkeeper Jamie Butler hopes signing a new deal at the club could see him receive an international call-up in the future.

England C coaches watched a number of Butler’s matches last season after a number of impressive performances and he has now signed a new contract at the club to end speculation over his future.

The 22-year-old stopper turned down an offer from Conference South rivals Eastbourne Borough to stay at the Aspect Arena after Concord matched the offer from the south coast side.

Butler had been training with Championship side Millwall since the turn of the year and Fulham had also shown an interest, but neither followed up their interest with a formal offer.

But Butler believes if he continues to improve, national selectors may come calling.

“I would like to think England C would notice my form if I keep on improving,” admitted Butler, who joined Concord from Met Police last summer. “They saw me play and hopefully they were impressed, but I am in a good place to keep on developing and I will do everything I can to help the team.

“It was a no-brainer signing on in the end,” said Butler. “I had a chat with Danny (Cowley) when Eastbourne made an offer, but the move didn’t make sense for me at the time.

“Danny said he was pleased with my season, but if I am honest with myself I would only say I played OK. I have a lot more to give and I hope to show that next season.”

Butler excelled between the sticks for the Beachboys last season, turning in a number of man-of-the-match performances as Concord finished ninth in the Conference South in their first season at that level. He also excelled in the successful Essex Senior Cup campaign.

Cowley agreed Butler deserved an England call-up.

He said: “I am so pleased Jamie has signed for us. He has by far the best distribution I have ever seen from a goalkeeper at this club and I have no doubt he will get the recognition he deserves from England in the future.”
