CANVEY Island FC are renaming their main stand as part of a new community drive initiative.

The Gulls have been partners with the Danny Green Fund since the start of last season and the club will now be rename their main stand The Danny Green Community Stand in recognition of the charity, which was set up in memory of 11-year-old Danny Green in 2012.

The stand is expected to be officially unveiled at Canvey’s home match against Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday, October 4.

The club has also recently achieved The FA Charter Standard status, along with the Canvey Island youth team – a “major step” according to club director Chris Sutton as it recognises and rewards high quality levels of provision in club and league football.

“This is just a start to the many plans we have to develop our club further support our community to be active, enjoy a healthy lifestyle and to bring grassroots football to the community,” said Mr Sutton “We have to thank partners such as Oikos, PROCAT, SX Heating and all our key stakeholders as it is their support that enables us to give something back to the young people in our community.”

The Prospects Stadium club will be holding a community day this Saturday which will launch the Mini Gulls grass roots development programme.

Children in Years One, Two and Three at primary school will be encouraged to take part, with all young people provided with a training shirt, and will be awarded badges as they learn new skills.

The scheme will be in partnership with Creative Sport and Leisure.

The Canvey Island Youth team will play exhibition games for the rest of the day against local youth teams before a fund-raising night rounds off the activities.
