Barton Rovers 0-1 Canvey Island
From Sharpenhoe Road
FA Cup 3rd Round Qualifying
CANVEY Island had John Sands to thank for assuring their passage into the final qualifying round of the FA Cup as his goal was enough to see off Barton Rovers.
Danny Heale’s side are gunning to go one better than last season after moving past the Southern League First Division outfit.
Barton had caused waves when they beat Margate in the last round and could have been ahead inside two minutes.
Ben Sawyer’s deflected effort forced on-loan West Ham United stopper Tim Brown into a fine save but the game was a slow burner.
The Gulls first real chance came after 30 minutes when another on-loan Hammers star Ben Marlow crossed to John Easterford but his header was over.
But the Gulls did take the lead moments later and it was Sands who scored his fourth goal in three matches.
Marlow fed Sands and his snap-shot caught stopper Kyle Forster off guard and crept into the corner.
Barton could have drawn level with an hour played and they had Rio Bryan-Edwards to thank for keeping them ahead, clearing off the line from Louis Lee with Brown beaten.
Danny Heale made the first change of the afternoon in the 64th minute when he replaced Victor Osobu with Marlon Agyakwa, and soon after this side started to go in search of a second goal.
Canvey survived a couple of penalty appeals before substitute Marlon Agyakwa tested the keeper.
Brown was forced into a late save with his feet to ensure Heale’s side are in today’s draw.
Canvey Island: Brown, Bryan-Edwards, Carter, Dobinson, Jones, Easterford, Thomas (King), Marlow, Kamara, Sands, Osobu (Agyakwa)
