DYNAMIC Canvey Island midfielder Tambeson Eyong has played his last game for the club after the Gulls received “an offer you don’t turn down” from Margate.

Eyong, who joined the club from AFC Hornchurch at the start of the season, had been a regular in Danny Heale’s side this season, impressing at right-back and in midfield.

Although currently out serving a suspension, after picking up a straight red card against Leatherhead last month, Eyong impressed in the Gulls’ 4-2 loss at financially-backed Margate – getting on the scoresheet in the process.

The Canvey star was scheduled to be back tonight, for the visit of Harrow Borough, but manager Danny Heale said once Margate came in it was going to be difficult to hold onto the star.

“We can’t compete with the finances of Margate,” admitted Heale, who said Eyong had been offered more than £600 a week to join the Kent side. “He has been excellent for us this season and I have no doubt he will go on to be a success with Margate. The club understands it is hard for him to say no to an offer like that so we wish him all the best.”

Eyong came through the youth system at West Ham United before moving to Dagenham & Redbridge, Scottish side Gretna while also turning out for Aveley and Harlow Town.

But Heale says his squad have more than enough quality to maintain a promotion push, starting with tonight’s game against 20th-placed Harrow Borough.

“We have to concentrate on this game now,” said Heale. “And we need to give a better account of ourselves. We lost both league matches against them last season so will give them the respect they deserve.”

The Gulls welcome back midfielder Harrison Chatting from suspension, after he missed Saturday’s FA Cup Third Qualifying Round win.
