Many of us enjoy visiting our local non-league club at the weekend and during the week.

We finish work, watch the match and head home ready for a new day.

But what about the players who have to fit in their work commitments around the football? How do they do it?

The Echo will be speaking to non-league stars from across south Essex this season about how they juggle two of life’s most crucial aspects – work and football.

This week we speak to Billericay Town goalkeeper BILLY LUMLEY, 24, who as well as keeping goal at New Lodge is also a personal trainer at the Virgin Active gym in Chigwell, as well as running a business that holds fitness sessions in old people’s homes.

FRIDAY

After a long Friday at work helping people achieve their fitness goals, I wind down at home, ready for our big game tomorrow against Peacehaven and Telescombe in the Ryman Premier League.

For dinner I have salmon, vegetables and a jacket potato! A proper bit of grub!

I then have a hot bath and a good stretch before laying in bed and watching Only Fools and Horses, eventually falling asleep to one of Uncle Albert’s stories!!

SATURDAY

It’s a massive game for the boys against Peacehaven today (Billericay go into the game without a win in seven and having drawn their last two games). Hopefully we can get the three points, but more importantly in my eyes is that we DO NOT get beat.

I have scrambled egg, chicken and baked beans as a pre-match meal and leave for Billericay at 12.30pm.

None of my other team-mates really come from my direction (unless one of the boys is with a little bird from my way!), so I tend to travel in alone and put some tunes on to get me in the mood for the game.

We ended up drawing the game 1-1 with a disappointing last-minute goal for the away team. But we played well and although it hurt, we managed to keep up our little run.

I have to shoot off straight after the game for a clients do, but normally I stay after for a beer with the chaps!

My man of the match for the game was Nutsy (Steve Sheehan). The big man headed everything which came in his direction and also he blocked about four shots with his big nose!

SUNDAY

I woke up still slightly disappointed we didn’t take all three points yesterday.

But oh well, as much as it hurts I try not to take the result home with me, as it’s not anyone at home’s fault!

I chill all day Sunday and recover from a hectic week at work and get ready to do it all over again, starting tomorrow night against East Thurrock in the Essex Senior Cup.

I have a roast dinner and a glass of red wine with my family and then stick a film on and doze off watching that.

MONDAY

The week begins with an early 7.30am client at the gym.

I’m looking forward to the game tonight for all of the day.

I really look forward to going into football, and don’t get me wrong, I try my absolute hardest in every game, but I really enjoy just seeing the boys. The changing room is good fun, whether it’s one of the boys cutting (Richard) Halle’s sock up or getting fined for no shower gel, a laugh isn’t far off.

This is so important in a football club as we are a team. Win or lose we do it as a team and the spirit must be high.

We end up beating East Thurrock 2-0 with goals from the skipper (who has a big hole in his sock) from the penalty spot and Affy (Afolabi Obafemi).

Well done boys!

My man of the match was Richard Halle! Because there were no dangly-leg tackles and the boy knows how to take a penno!

TUESDAY

No rest for the wicked as I'm up and out the door for another 7.30am client! Tuesdays are my old people’s homes days where I go around to various locations in south, east and north london and hold fitness classes for the elderly! It's great fun and I don’t really see this as work. It’s so rewarding putting a smile on some people’s faces!

As a non-league footballer you need to keep your fitness up, so I attend a spin class in the evening. I sit at the back of the class so I get a good view!!
