Hampton & Richmond Borough 1-2 Canvey Island
Ryman Premier League
From the Beveree Stadium
CANVEY Island came from behind to win their first league game in a month at Hampton & Richmond Borough.
The Gulls had lost three on the bounce but were indebted to two defenders for securing the points, with Mike Jones and Rio Bryan-Edwards grabbing the goals.
And it looked like it would be another disappointing day for Danny Heale’s men when Jake Rose bent home a free-kick for the hosts shortly before the break.
Canvey could consider themselves unfortunate to go in behind as they created some good openings in the early stages – with Harrison Chatting hitting the bar with a lob.
Ishmail Kamara and Jack Simmons also had chances, with the latter linking up well with debutant Geoff Mitchell.
And they were made to pay when Rose scored from the set-piece, despite Tim Brown getting a strong hand on the ball.
Nick Bignall was the width of the crossbar away from doubling Hampton’s advantage and Canvey took full advantage.
The equalizer came with 15 minutes to play and it involved two substitutes, Anthony Thomas and Victor Osobu. They exchanged passes with the former whipping in a delightful cross for Jones to head home.
And Bryan-Edwards opened his account for the season when he out-climbed the defender to head home and send the Gulls faithful home happy.
