CANVEY Island have loaned Barnet striker George Sykes in their bid to haul themselves away from the relegation mire.

The 6ft 4in frontman joins having spent the first half of the season at Conference South outfit Bishop’s Stortford, but will hope to make an immediate impression at the struggling Gulls.

Canvey’s match at Hendon was postponed at the weekend because of a frozen pitch but they are hoping to secure their first win away from home since mid November.

And manager Danny Heale says his side are all set to end that run at Enfield Town tonight, with the help of their new 20-year-old striker.

“We are good and ready to go,” he said. “The addition of Sykes will help us out up the top end of the pitch. He has experience of playing at a higher level and he will fit in well here.

“We are without Taylor Tombides and we have lost Kevin Dobinson to a calf injury but we still have a strong enough team to win.”

Tombides is ineligible for the Gulls after he played for Colchester United’s under-21s last week. League rules state he is now unable to play for the club for the next fortnight.

Enfield sit 12th in the table, 10 points above Canvey, and have won eight of their 13 home games.

But Heale is confident Canvey will soon start picking up points.

“We are not feeling sorry for ourselves,” he said.

“We need to pick ourselves up and we have games in hand over all the sides around us so I am not worried.”
