RYMAN ONE NORTH: Great Wakering Rovers striker Jay Nash says he turned down the chance to join Witham Town because he could never forgive himself if he left and Rovers went on to be relegated.

The Ryman Premier League side put in a seven-day approach for 18-goal Nash last week, as they look to avoid an immediate return to the Ryman One North.

But Nash, who has played at Burroughs Park since 2012, said he wants to push Dan Trenkel’s side to safety, despite admitting he was flattered at Witham’s interest.

“After the game against Dereham I was told that Witham had come in for me and put in a seven-day approach,” said Nash, who could have trebled his wages had he made the move.

“It was flattering of course but my loyalty is with Wakering. I want to stay here and, firstly and foremost, keep Wakering in the division.

“I could never forgive myself if I left and they were to go down. I am not saying that is what would happen but I couldn’t look Trenks in the eye again if it did.

“I spoke with Brad King (Witham coach) and he told me they wanted someone to go there who would put in the hard graft and put the ball in the net. In that sense it is great my work is being recognised and it gives me great confidence.

“I am a confidence player and this has given me a great boost in the closing months of the season. I know the work I do here is appreciated and that means a lot.”

Nash briefly left Wakering to play for Canvey Island last season, making nine appearances and scoring once, but acknowledges it wasn’t the right move for him.

“I had made the step up last summer when I went over to Canvey for a few games and that didn’t work out for me.

“That was at the back of my mind.

“Trenks and Gary Ansell (assistant manager) wanted me to give it a go there but I came back and I would like to think I have repaid their faith with the goals I have scored.

“I have 18 in all competitions, although my mate has said I have to buy those awful boots with the built-in sock if I get 25!”

Nash said Wakering were focusing on themselves ahead of their match with Thurrock neighbours Tilbury tomorrow, as they look to improve their recent form.

Wakering have won only once since New Year’s Day but Nash says the team’s fortunes will turn.

“If we look at what we are doing wrong and put that right we will be OK,” he said.

“We know we aren’t playing as well as we should be and hopefully we can turn that around tomorrow.”
