FORMER professional Glenn Poole has quit Billericay Town to take up a new challenge as the end of his career approaches.

The 34-year-old has been an integral cog in Town manager Craig Edwards’ team for the last three-and-a-half years, and the midfielder called Edwards yesterday evening to break the news.

And the Town manager, who appointed Poole vice-captain, said the veteran midfielder was one of his ‘best ever’ signings.

“Glenn felt he needed a fresh challenge as he is coming toward the end of his playing days,” he said. “He has been one of my best ever signings and I owe him plenty for what he has given me over many years.

“I fully expect Glenn to go into a player/coach, player/manager role as it's something he wants to do.”

Poole has enjoyed one of his most successful ever seasons at the club, missing only a handful of games as the New Lodge side enjoyed a play-off tilt in the Ryman Premier League and reached the final of the Essex Senior Cup.

The former Brentford, Rochford, Grays Athletic and Thurrock man was named as managers, players’ and supporters’ player of the season for his performances in the last campaign.

And Edwards says he is leaving at a fitting time.

“It's fitting Glenn has bowed out after such a good season and I'm sure the New Lodge faithful along with myself and everyone at the club wish him well wherever he turns out next season.”
