A STUNNING 30-yard free kick from Sam Taylor saw Hullbridge Sports beat Hadleigh United in the extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup.

His free-kick just after half-time sent them onto a deserved victory, after Hullbridge had started well and taken the lead. A low drilled finish from the edge of the box by winger Matt Brinklow flew past goalkeeper Bobby Mason into the bottom right-hand corner.

Hullbridge missed chances to extend their lead as good work down the left by Danny Thrower resulted in the Reds’ equaliser, getting to the byline before pulling back for Williams to have an easy tap in.

But the magic of the Cup returned with Taylor’s free-kick , which flew over the wall into the top corner.

Hadleigh had a late shout for a penalty waved away by the referee, while Luke Hornsley was involved again for Hullbridge as his run ended up with an effort cannoning off the crossbar.

And Hodgson was delighted with the win, which set up a clash with Maldon & Tiptree.

“He’s now scored three free-kicks in three matches but I think this one was the best one.

“I felt we deserved the win but it was nervy towards the end. We did hang on but overall we had the better chances. I just hope we can take more of those chances next time. I can’t complain with the start we have made to the season.”

It was also a winning start in the competition for Basildon United and Southend Manor.

Bees beat Sporting Bengal United 3-1 to set up a tie with Long Melford.

Callum Leahy, Fahad Nyanja and Dan Howett scored the goals in what was a terrific afternoon for player/manager Craig Gillam.

Manor beat Codicote by the same score line in impressive fashion.

Wayne Seal’s men pocketed £1,500, with Mike Fatt and a Rhyss Fatt double enough for the home team.

The surprise casualties were Bowers & Pitsea, who lost 1-0 at home to Ilford.
