Great Wakering Rovers manager Dan Trenkel says building a strong team spirit has been crucial in their terrific start to the season.

Having taken seven points from the first three games, Rovers beat Tilbury 3-1 in the first round of the Alan Turvey League Cup on Tuesday night, thanks to goals from Billy Johnson, James Pugsley and Tom Ranger.

But Trenkel says there is no secret to their success, with just hard work and endeavour the reasons behind their unbeaten opening.

“The boys worked ever so hard during pre-season training fitness wise and tactically, and that work, plus the ability to listen to instructions, combined with the team spirit that they have built over the last three years is what is getting them results,” he insisted.

“We have set no targets this season,” he went on. “We know that we are going to be underdogs in virtually every game this season so all that I ask of every player is to show a good attitude and have that desire inside of them to do the hard work. If we get that from every player then we will run all of these big spenders close.”

Ranger’s goal was his fourth in four games so far this season and Trenkel, who has previously said he believes the youngster could go on to play professionally, said he is unsurprised at his flying start to the campaign.

“Tom has started the season like I expected him to,” he said. “He is a grounded young man who will only get better. He is still learning his position but his natural ability, technique and awareness is frightening.”
