GREAT Wakering Rovers boss Dan Trenkel hopes his side’s dramatic defeat to Wroxham at the weekend will act as a “wake-up call”.

Rovers welcome Heybridge Swifts to Burroughs Park tonight just three days after surrending a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 to Wroxham.

A win would have sent them to the top of the table, something which added to the frustration according to Trenkel.

“I still can’t believe how we didn’t win it,” said Trenkel. “For 50 minutes we absolutely tore Wroxham apart and 3-1 was a flattering scoreline for them.

“But we made some really basic errors at the back for all four of their goals which is really disappointing.

“My back four and keeper have been magnificent so far but they just had a lapse in concentration. Wroxham have not had to work for their goals and it’s just mystifying after the way we ripped them apart in the first half.

“It was hugely frustrating as we would’ve gone top of the league and it would've been purely on merit.

“However, it is a wake-up call for the boys and I think it was born out of complacency and they need to realise we have to work hard for 90 minutes.

“No game in this league will be won in the first 45 minutes.”

Trenkel says he is confident his side will bounce right back against Swifts tonight and said, if anything, last Saturday’s result has made his team talk an easy one.

“It makes my team talk easy now, as they need to give a huge response to pay everyone at the club back for that second half performance,” Trenkel said. “They have been fantastic since we came back to training in June, and I know they’ll put in a performance tomorrow.”

THE PREVIEW: Great Wakering Rovers’ superb start to the new season was brought to a halt at the weekend, as they surrendered a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 at home to Wroxham.

Tonight’s rivals Heybridge Swifts were also beaten at the weekend, going down 2-0 at home to Dereham Town, in what was their third defeat in four games in the league.

And Rovers will be looking to take advantage of their poor start, and repeat their win in the corresponding fixture last season.
