HULLBRIDGE Sports recorded the cup shock of the preliminary round of the FA Cup as they dumped Ryman One North big boys Maldon & Tiptree.

Luke Hornsley and Matt Brinklow struck either side of half-time to see them through to the next round and a tie with borough rivals Basildon United.

Goalkeeper Bobby Mason also starred as he made a fine penalty save to keep the score 1-0 as the game entered its final throes, before Brinklow made sure of the result.

Hornsley had put the hosts ahead just after the half-hour mark and Sports had been good value for their lead. However, it looked as though that was about to come crashing down around them when a penalty was awarded to Maldon late on.

Matt Lock stepped up but Mason was not to be beaten as the penalty was fired down the middle.

“It was a fantastic performance with great effort and determination from all the boys today and the result was fully deserved,” said Sports manager Rob Hodgson. “We went to watch them on Tuesday and knew we would have to concede possession to them at times, but we knew we had the capability to defend when required and have the firepower to punish their leaking defence.

“We did our homework and it paid off.”

Basildon United set up the tie after a narrow 1-0 win over Long Melford.

Craig Gillam scored the only goal against the side from the Eastern Counties Premier Division.

It was a big day for Southend Manor as they made the trip to the north of the county to take on Ryman One North favourites Harlow Town.

In the end they were comfortably beaten 5-1, with Reis Meecham netting the away goal shortly after half-time to make it 2-1. But Town raced away with it after that.

In the Essex Senior League Bowers & Pitsea romped to a 3-0 win over Newham to make it four wins out of four.

Ashley Wackers-Kyriacou opened the scoring after he slid home a fine cross, with Tom Hine making it 2-0 after good work from Michael Begg.

Scott Pethers hit the post before half-time, before he did get on the score-sheet midway through the second period.
