CANVEY Island secured a vital three points against Farnborough, as Martin Touhy’s 18th goal of the season saw them end their dreadful recent run of form.

The striker lashed home 10 minutes from time, although the Gulls were very much indebted to a goalkeeping masterclass from home stopper Conor Gough.

Gough kept out George Hallahan on more than one occasion as well as former Canvey man Usman Adeniji in the second-half to keep their first clean sheet since the end of October.

Although Farnborough had lost 13 of their 14 away matches, they had the better of the early chances.

Gough produced a fine save to deny Hallahan, with the same man again testing the Canvey keeper moments later, as the striker latched onto a low cross from Tommy Wright only for Gough to keep him out.

Perry Ryan was kept out by the keeper, plus the follow-up from the persistent Hallahan, with Canvey clinging on.

Their best effort of the first-half fell to Touhy. Tony Stokes’ flick over the top sent him clear, but Tuohy could only divert the ball narrowly wide.

At the start of the second-half Stokes missed a glorious chance as he was inches away from converting a Harrison Chatting corner.

Gough made another fine save on the hour mark, denying Boro substitute Adeniji, and when Canvey got the goal it was arguably harsh on the visitors.

Mitchell Gilby’s cross from the right found Jay Curran at the back post. He played the ball back from the byline to the onrushing Touhy, and he smashed home from close range.
