ANOTHER season is over and it has been a successful one, on the whole, for the majority of south Essex’s non-league teams. With East Thurrock United and Bowers & Pitsea winning promotion and Concord Rangers and Basildon United winning cup competitions, there has been plenty to cheer in the 2015/16 season.

The week LUKE LAMBERT rounds up all our teams’ seasons, with today’s focus on Canvey Island’s campaign in the Ryman Premier League. Here is what manager Danny Heale had to say.

A week after the season has finished, how do you view what you have achieved this year?

I look at it in different ways. For much of this season we have had the new clubhouse (costing £300,000) in the back of our minds. We stayed up on the last day last season and to finish mid table this year was OK.

We don’t carry a big squad and going top for a week midway through October ironically didn’t help us as I think we probably got a bit carried away.

We didn’t have enough bodies over the course of the winter and we missed key players with injuries. Once we got going we could never get into any sort of a run and it fell a bit flat towards the end.

What is your biggest satisfaction about the season?

We have had an up and down season. A lot has changed but keeping a chairman in place has been important. Things are looking more positive with John Batch coming in. He has helped me a lot and I played under him too which has helped.

We needed that continuity back when I took over but we have it now which is what matters. We have done what we needed to do this year and we need everyone to stick together now if we want to compete higher up the league.

What is your biggest disappointment about the season?

The first two years we did well in the cup competitions. Going out in the FA Cup at the first attempt against Ipswich Wanderers deflated our season and not maintaining that form at the top was disappointing. To be going well after 25 games and to end up in 14th was not how we wanted things to end.

Which player(s) has impressed you the most this season?

There were a few raised eyebrows when Martin Tuohy came in as he had gone quiet in recent seasons with injuries but he has come here and he has been a revelation, scoring 25 league goals.

Jake Pitty is another who has pushed on after arriving from Chelmsford Academy. Winning the Supporters’ Player of the Year at such a young age is very impressive.

What was your favourite game? And why?

Winning seven games in a row at the start of the season was very satisfying. But the last minute win against Wingate & Finchley in September really sparked that run so that would be up there. Beating Billericay 3-0 in August was another good day.

What are your targets for next season?

Every year you go out to win it and, if that doesn’t work out, you want to be in and around the play-offs. We want a better run in the cup competitions next year and I think we will have to sit down and look at personnel. We have leaked too many goals and that needs looking at along with a number of other areas.

What have you learned about yourself as a manager this season?

You can’t take it too seriously. I was a player for a while and a few bad results can ruin your other life and when you least expect to get a result you get one and that’s a boost. But I am only 35 and am a young manager so still have a lot to learn. I am perhaps too loyal as well but I will develop as the seasons pass.

Can you give Canvey Island a score out of 10 for this season? And explain why?

We have got a lot of youngsters and I would say a 6/10. We had very good patches and we flitted in and out of games too. There were injury and suspension problems to deal with too so it wasn’t horrendous but we will definitely build on it.
