EAST THURROCK UNITED/NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTH

It was a season to remember for East Thurrock United last year as they won promotion to the National League South for the first time in their history.

The Rocks went up via the play-offs and excelled for much of the campaign, with a smaller squad than many of their opponents.

Sam Higgins hit 45 goals in another stellar campaign, as he was named in the team of the year with team-mate Tom Wraight, although much of their success was based on an excellent defensive record.

And manager John Coventry admits he is not one to build a heavy pre-season schedule, choosing to return a week later than a number of the other teams to give his players the chance to recuperate.

“I have never been one to start early,” he said. “I like to get games in after five or six sessions. I am looking for one more fixture. Some teams have been back for a week training but we haven’t done it that way. Everyone is different and this way works for us.

“I have some trialists but I am looking for one more signing but there is no rush yet.

“If you have access to getting higher profile friendless then good on those teams but I am very happy with my schedule. Concord for example are closer to Southend and have connections with Braintree but for me it is about minutes on the pitch and the opposition doesn’t come into it.

“When you have a big side booked you never know if it will go ahead and I don’t want an unwanted interruptions.

“I don’t worry about results as we make a lot of changes at half-time, but I am excited to get going.”
