GREAT Wakering Rovers’ new addition Leon Gordon says he wants to wind down his career by scoring goals after dropping down to the Ryman One North.

The 32-year-old becomes the latest new addition to link up with Gary Ansell at Burroughs Park, having played in the Ryman Premier League for Brentwood Town last campaign.

Gordon made his name with Canvey Island, appearing for the Gulls more than 250 times including a brief return last season, and has also turned out for their rivals Concord Rangers before ending last season with Brentwood.

And Gordon, who has spent much of the last couple of season’s playing at right-back, says he would love to get a more attacking role this season as he enters the twilight of his playing career.

“I have had a good hard think about what I wanted to do this summer,” said Gordon, who lives in Leigh-on-Sea. “For the last 12 or 13 years it has been football first and everything else second and I decided it wasn’t fair on my family. I want a happy medium.

“Playing for Wakering will mean less travelling and that was a factor. I had a chat with a few people and Wakering is local to me, it is a good club and it made sense on a lot of levels.

“I am hoping to play more attacking all being well. I want to finish my career scoring goals, and get that buzz.

“This will be probably be my final season but we will have to wait and see what happens.”

Gordon is excited at the prospect of joining up with Wakering, with Ansell adding Kris Newby, Adalberto Pinto and Matt Belcher to his squad last week.

And dad-of-two Gordon brings much-needed experience to the team that are looking to secure a top half finish in the upcoming campaign.

And he says he believes he still has plenty to offer.

“I know Gary and it seems like a good squad he is putting together,” said Gordon. “There are some talented players there and I hope to bring something to the group.

“It is a while since I have known that league but Gary has made some good signings and I hope we can do something.”
