Ryman Premier League
CANVEY Island were brought down to earth with a bump as title favourites Havant & Waterlooville ran riot in their Ryman Premier League clash.
Havant won 4-0 to earn their seventh win of the season, with the opener coming after 10 minutes. A neat cross at the near post was met by a sliding James Hayter and the ball zipped past Conor Gough on the wet surface.
The same man sent a shot wide of the post when he should have scored, with Joey May forcing Havant goalkeeper Ryan Young into a neat save with Canvey’s first clear-cut chance.
Ben Swallow played a key role in the second goal of the afternoon, as his trickery and far post cross was met by an unmarked Theo Lewis and he powered a header into the corner.
Gough made several saves as the half wore on as he continued to impress, with the score 2-0 at half-time.
Substitute Mitchell Gilbey shot wide after the break as the Gulls threatened a comeback, but the result was confirmed with an hour played. Good work from Matt Paterson saw Gough forced into another good save but, as Jake Pitty slipped, in slid George Barker to score.
Steve Sheehan had a header disallowed for offside, with Harrison Chatting forcing Young into a splendid save late on.
But Havant ended the day on top as barker’s strike hit the foot of the post and Alfie Rutherford tucked home the rebound.
Canvey Island: Gough, Morrison, Dumas, May, O’Rawe (Pitty), Sheehan, Simmons (Gilbey), O’Leary, Sykes (Stokes), Tuohy, Chatting
