BASILDON United took the derby honours as they got the better of Hullbridge Sports in the Essex Senior League.

Basildon were looking to continue their impressive recent form while Hullbridge were struggling for consistency despite their lofty league standing.

It was an even encounter, with Basildon pressing forward early on but unable to find a way past impressive Hullbridge stopper James Pellin.

The goal came on the hour mark, as Daryl Cooper profited on lax defending to lash past Pellin for the opener.

Sports had chances to force the equaliser but Basildon held firm and took the points.

It was disappointment for Southend Manor as they were beaten in the FA Vase by Canning Town.

Manor were favourites in the second qualifying round but they went on penalty kicks.

After 120 goalless minutes, Manor went out 5-4 to exit the competition.

And manager Stuart Marshall said he was disappointed with the manner of the defeat.

“I would like to congratulate Canning Town on their win and wish them all the very best for the remainder of the season,” he said.

“I would like to apologise to all connected with the club the result wasn't good enough. As manager it's my responsibility.”
