BLUES boss Steve Tilson admitted to being impressed by left back Jamie Clapham in tonight's 1-0 win at Billericay Town.

The former Ipswich Town defender played the full 90 minutes at New Lodge.

And he will again be in action for the Shrimpers at Chelmsford City on Monday.

“I thought Jamie did well,” confirmed Tilson.

“He comes with loads of experience and we will be having another look at him at Chelmsford.”

Anthony Grant, who was with Southend on loan towards the end of last season, also played last night and will hold more talks with Tilson tomorrow morning.

“This was a chance for us to see Anthony in action again,” said the Seasiders chief.

“He’s available on a free transfer from Chelsea and he will be training with us today and we will be holding more talks.

“I thought he did well for us too.”

Damian Scannell grabbed the only goal of the game against the Ryman Premier League outfit as the Shrimpers returned to winning ways after a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Braintree Town on Saturday.

Scannell was causing problems early on and shot wide while under pressure early on before Billericay based Lee Barnard was denied by a fine double save by Town keeper Ronnie Worster.

Scanell then struck the post from 18 yards but in the 37th minute he finally made the breakthrough as he fired home from eight yards.

At the start of the second half, the home-side’s Steven Ferguson blazed over from 12 yards before Peter Clarke was denied at the other end of the field by Worster.

The Town shot-stopper then stopped Nicky Bailey making it 2-0 as his heroics were also rewarded late on as Billericay twice went close to equalising in the final five minutes.

Bradley Woods-Garness fired wide of the left post from 12 yards and right at the death Ferguson was denied by Steve Mildenhall when he should have scored.
