ROCHFORD Hundred consolidated their position at the top of the London Three North East table with a 25-15 victory over promotion rivals Brentwood on Saturday.

Tries from Matt Norris, Jon Baker and Greg Stubbs secured a ninth win in 11th games for the home side, who remain two points clear.

Tom Ashton added two conversions and also kicked two penalties as Rochford continued their excellent run of results.

Brentwood had been second going into the game but, while delighted with the win, Rochford’s director of rugby Dean Cutting refused to get too carried away.

“Things are going well and we’re delighted with this win but there is still an awful long way to go this season,” said Cutting.

“It’s still only December and we have to play all the other teams again yet, so our feet remain firmly on the floor.

“We’re pleased with how it’s going but there is nothing to celebrate just yet.”

Cutting was satisfied with the performance against Brentwood though and particularly pleased with the way his side improved during the second half.

“We knew what to expect from them and the first half was quite close,” said Cutting.

“We had another chat at the break and we decided to become more physical with them. I think that made a difference in the end because we got further ahead.

“It’s important to win the games against the teams around you and that’s what we’ve been doing so long may it continue.”

Rochford have surged to the top despite injuries to key players, including skipper Sam Tape, who is currently sidelined with a broken thumb.

His return will boost the team even further in the new year but this weekend sees a break from the league as Hundred host Harpenden in the fourth round of the EDF Senior Vase.

“It will be a chance for us to rest one or two players,” said Cutting.

“But for those coming in it is an opportunity to show what they can do.”
