Revell relishing return to full training

PRE-SEASON training is not normally a time for enjoyment among footballers.

But try telling that to Southend United striker Alex Revell.

He is now approaching full fitness after recovering from the broken leg he sustained against Leyton Orient last January.

And Revell is therefore delighted to back in action.

“It’s great to be back out there every day with the rest of the lads after being out for so long,” said the 25-year-old.

“I’m obviously still having the odd pain here and there because it’s been a while since I’ve been training every day but I’m pleased with how it’s going.

“Training for everyone has gone well and because we’re in good shape we’ve been able to start working with the footballs much earlier on this year which is what we like.”

The introduction of ball-work also improved Revell’s confidence in his leg after he survived an accidental kick from one of his team-mates.

“Adam Barrett gave it a bit of kick and, after my initial scream, I’ve come through that fine,” said Revell.

“It was probably what I needed in fairness and I’m feeling good about things.

“I worked hard during the summer to get as fit as I could and my aim now is to train every day.

“Sometimes in pre-season that doesn’t happen because you get the odd knock but I don’t want that happening because it’s an important time for us all.”

Revell will continue to train with the rest of his Shrimpers team-mates at Boots and Laces next week.

And he has been given the all clear to play in the pre-season friendlies which start away at Great Wakering on Friday July 10.

“I’ve spoken to John Stannard (Southend’s physiotherapist) about it and he has given me the all clear to play,” said Revell.

“I wasn’t sure what was going to happen or what the plan was so to know I can play is brilliant.

“I’ve really missed being involved in games so I’m really looking to getting out there again but I know it will take a bit of time to be fully match fit again.”
