BOWERS and Pitsea look to need a miracle if they are to make the semi-finals of the League Cup.
For in Saturday’s home first leg of their quarter-final they crashed to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Burnham Ramblers.
The second leg is at Burnham next Saturday but before that Bowers, who beat Southend United in a previous round, will hope to make further progress in the Essex Senior Cup tomorrow when they visit Ryman Premier side Waltham Abbey.
Craig Gillam got Bowers’ goal on 50 minutes with Burnham’s scoring being shared by Chris Lewis (2), Jamie Clarke and Mark Gorbell.
Back in the league, Southend Manor and Hullbridge Sports fought out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Southchurch Park which, due to the counter-attraction of Christmas shopping, attracted only 15 paying fans.
Gary Paterson gave Hullbridge, who visit Tiptree United tomorrow, a 20th-minute lead which Manor equalised through Dan Stanley’s 82nd-minute spot-kick.
Basildon United, watched by 27 after bringing forward their kick-off to 2pm and admitting under-16s free of charge, stepped up their bid for honours with a 3-1 home win over Tiptree.
Martyn Guest, Dave Huzzy and Wes Bocking — the latter still leading the league scoring charts with 15 goals — netted for the new towners, with Bradley Hunter replying.
Other league results: Bethnal Green 1, Witham 1; Clapton 1, Barkingside 2; Enfield 1893 0, Barking 0; Eton Manor 0, Takeley 4; London APSA 0, Sawbridgeworth 0; Mauritius Sports 0, Stansted 1.
