PAUL Sturrock is aiming to become Southend United’s very own special one.
The Scotsman, who is attempting to transform Blues’ fortunes after their recent troubles, has learned from some of the top managers in the game.
But some — including current Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho — have learned plenty from Sturrock, and it was the Southend boss who handed the Portugese chief his UEFA coaching badges at the start of his career.
“It was a while ago now, but that’s my claim to fame,” said Sturrock.
“I don’t really remember too much about it other than the fact he was working with Barcelona at the time and luckily enough he passed as well.
“I think I taught him everything he knows!”
Mourinho, who has dubbed himself the special one, has since gone on to secure success with FC Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan before taking charge of Madrid during the summer.
However, he is not the only top boss with links to Sturrock, as the 53-year-old also played for the Scotland side managed by Sir Alex Ferguson at the 1986 World Cup.
