JOE Galbraith and Rob Moss came out tops in Rochford Hundred’s big 36-hole scratch and handicap day on Sunday – the biggest event in the club’s calendar.

Galbraith took the scratch cup with a two under par 140 - two better than cadet Ben Franklin with Tony Hadley third on 143.

Seven handicapper Rob Moss fired a net 135 to take the handicap honours ahead of Steve Bradley (137) and Richard Skinner (139).

Galbraith got off to a flying start in the morning with a two under 69 – an eagle, three birdies and 11 pars – with Franklin and Jimmy Dale matching his score.

But it was Galbraith who kept it going after lunch when he mastered an ever strengthening wind to post a level par 71 with both Franklin (73) and Dale (76) fading out of the picture.

Galbraith notched a brace of birdies plus 14 pars second time around while the consistent Hadley carded a 72 together with a 71 to snatch third spot. Moss had a superb net 65 in the first round – six birdies and six pars – and followed that up with a 70.

The best morning net prize was collected by Nigel Mathers (67) on countback in front of Neil Mylroie (67) with the afternoon going to Ray Weidner (68) from vice-Captain Barry Finch (69).

Top veteran was Geoff Holyland with Keith Butler runner-up.

Longest drive came from Steve Weidner, more than 400 yards on the sixth, with Barry Finch and John Pleasant nearest the pins on the 11th and 18th.

Rochford’s midweek weekly Stableford competition to qualify for the Scott Spencer trophy was won by Ross Druitt on 40 points – one more than Timothy Gleadall and Arthur Leonard. Druitt, who plays off four, birdied five holes and parred nine.

Rochford Ladies played a bisque bogey and the winner on countback was Joyce Farey (+7) from Sue Alexander. Girl cadets competed for the Jo Rumsey Cup and the winner was Olivia Frost with 42 points from Freya Noad on 38.
