SOUTHEND United centre-back Mark Phillips was doubly delighted following his side’s 1-0 win over Gillingham.

Phillips was thrilled to head home the only goal of a dramatic game at Roots Hall on Tuesday night.

But he was equally as satisfied with the clean sheet at the other end of the field.

“It was a very pleasing night all round because we dug deep to beat a good Gillingham side,” said Phillips, 29.

“To score the goal was very nice but we were so pleased to get the clean sheet.

“I actually thought we had been defending well all season but had been getting punished for being a bit naïve at times.

“Against Gillingham though, I think more of the team thought more about their defending.

“The midfield and the strikers made sure we had a good shape which was key, especially when we went down to 10 men.”

Southend had to play the final 24 minutes with a numerical disadvantage after Bilel Mohsni was sent off for picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.

Despite the Frenchman’s dismissal, Blues clung on for their first clean sheet in the league since the opening day success over Hereford United.

And Phillips’ header made sure that was rewarded with all three points.

“It was a great feeling to see the ball go in right at the end,” said Phillips.

“It was my third goal of the season and I’m enjoying having that freedom to attack the ball from set pieces.
