Canvey make it two wins from two with victory over Leiston
Canvey made it two wins from two with an accomplished home victory over league newcomers Leiston last night.
Steve Tilson ’s side did all the damage in a destructive first-half from which they took a 2-0 lead, although it should certainly have been more.
But a poacher’s finish from Danny Heale and a penalty from Rob King provided a platform for an assured shut-out in a less exciting second-half in front of a crowd of 305 at the Prospects Stadium.
They took a 13th minute lead when Heale pounced on keeper Louis Johnson’s spill from Bradely Woods-Garness’ grass-cutter, and turned the loose ball home from close range.
And the hosts started to boss the game as they pressed high up the pitch and forced errors which allowed Leon Gordon to steer a first-time volley wide and Woods-Garness to fire over from an angle.
A rare foray forward from Rhys Henry down the left ended with the midfielder shooting over as Leiston struggled to get a foothold in the game.
Canvey threatened to run riot in the final 10 minutes of the half which started when Rickie Hayles headed against the face of the crossbar from Ashley Dumas’ corner.
And they made it 2-0 from the penalty spot when Leiston skipper David Head chopped down Woods-Garness and skipper King side-footed the ball inside the right-hand post.
They should have extended that lead when Heale put a free header over from underneath the cross bar.
Then Woods-Garness had an even better chance as he shrugged off Seb Dunbar but then fired into the legs of Jonson from six yards.
It was nip and tuck for 25 minutes after the restart. Woods-Garness continued to look the brightest spark on the pitch and he played in Leon Gordon to draw a good low stop from Johnson.
But it was a far tighter 45 minutes in which a Leiston side who play an attractive brand of football continued to probe, but were shut out by a burgeoning Canvey rearguard.
Canvey (4-4-2): Jones; Miller, Hayles, Orlu, Dumas; Gordon, King, Hawes, Mason (Edgar 80); Heale, Woods-Garness.
Echo MOM: Bradley Woods-Garness (Canvey).
