IT was a frustrating day for Canvey as they failed to break down stiff Wroxham resistance in the FA Trophy.

The goalless draw at Park Lane means the Gulls must now travel up to Norfolk on Tuesday night.

Steve Tilson ’s men were frustrated by the visitors from Ryman One North who played ultra-defensive football from the kick off.

Canvey started brightly with the first chance coming in the sixth minute when Jay Curran ran onto Ashley Dumas’ long ball.

The forward sent the ball into the box where James Hawes eventually managed to give it back to Curran, but his shot flew wide.

Wroxham’s game-plan was to counter attack and one surge saw Ben Thompson put the ball into the net after 25 minutes, only to see it chalked off for offside.

Two minutes before half time Canvey got their best chance to take the lead when Curran cut the ball back from the byline, finding Leon Gordon in front of an open goal.

However defender Roscoe Hipperson’s last ditch lunge was enough to deflect the ball wide.

The frustration continued in the second half for the Gulls as shots continuously got blocked, while Wroxham controlled aerial battles.

The home side became sloppy, and in the 69th minute a set piece straight from the training ground was horribly messed up and Wroxham broke away.

Luckily left back Remy Gordon’s shot rolled comfortably into Ashley Jones’ hands.

The best chance of the half for Canvey came three minutes later when Kevin Dobinson battled through a couple of challenges before pulling back to Curran, but he was unable to hit his shot on target.

After the game, Tilson said he was annoyed with Wroxham’s tactics.

“They come for the draw, simple as that," he said. “They put 11 people behind the ball and made it hard for us, but I thought what we needed was a little bit more desire in the final third and it could have been different.

“It’ll be a little bit more open at their place on Tuesday and we’ll have to take the chances that come our way.”
