SOUTHEND Saxons star Chris Vaughan is to retire from rugby - 17 years after making his first team debut for the club.

Vaughan has helped Saxons secure the Regional Two Anglia in the final season of his career.

And Southend’s director of rugby Josh Ward feels the long-serving centre has been a class act during his lengthy spell at Warners Bridge.

“What Chris has done for our club is nothing short of phenomenal,” said Ward.

“His qualities and commitment, not just as a rugby player but also as a person, are a credit to him and his family.

“Chris made his Saxons debut in 2007 and from there has played a leading role in the senior set up.

“He has gone to make just shy of 350 senior caps, the most capped senior player in the modern era.

“I am eternally grateful to Chris and everything he has done for us, this club and team.”

Vaughan led Southend onto the pitch ahead of Saturday’s match with Woodford and scored a try in his side’s 41-13 win.

The victory was the Saxons’ 21st in succession as they ended an impressive league campaign in fine style.

But Ward hopes there is still more to come for the long-serving centre.

“Saturday was a fitting finale, sending him out in a promotion winning side but I’d love to get to Twickenham for him in the Papa Johns Community Cup,” said Ward.

“Chris will always have a place at our club and in our set up but we respect his decision to spend more time with his young family.”

Southend begin their cup campaign with a trip to Beckenham this weekend before taking on Amersham & Chiltern and Eton Manor in the group stage of the competition.
